Private Offline AI Assistant with Local LLMs

Run an explicitly local model, measure memory and latency, and verify its offline behavior on your own machine.

Build guide and prerequisites

Follow this roadmap to implement and validate your own application, then record your observed results.

  • Terminal and Python basics.
  • Enough disk and memory for a small model; permission to install local software and download model weights.

Required tools and free options

  • Ollama
  • Python
  • SQLite for optional history
  • Operating-system network and resource monitors

Cost: No hosted inference fees for an explicitly local model. Downloads, disk, RAM and electricity are still needed. Do not select a cloud model or assume every model fits consumer hardware.

Start with a smaller working example

Downloadable local chatbot baseline →

This baseline connects to a local model. Quantization comparison, vector search, desktop packaging and privacy verification are additional work, not included starter features.

Build it step by step

  1. 1. Inventory the machine

Record RAM, GPU memory if present, disk space and operating system. Choose a small quantized model whose published requirements fit; record its license and model identifier rather than assuming an 8B model will run well.

  2. 2. Prepare the local baseline

Follow the linked starter and Ollama setup using an explicitly local model. Download the model while online. Keep the service bound to loopback and ensure the application is configured to use that local endpoint.

  3. 3. Measure a fixed prompt set

Write five short prompts with known expected characteristics. Run them twice, recording startup time, time to first visible output, total time and memory usage. Separate the first cold run from warmed runs.

  4. 4. Verify offline operation

After downloading everything, disconnect the network and repeat a short query. Observe connections and errors with the OS monitor. Report exactly what you tested; one successful offline run does not prove every dependency never communicates online.

  5. 5. Add bounded persistence

If you add history, store it locally in a project-owned SQLite file, cap context length and include a visible clear-history action. Test that new sessions do not inherit old context accidentally. Treat local storage as sensitive even without cloud access.

  6. 6. Compare an optimization fairly

Compare two model sizes or quantizations using the same prompts and hardware. Record quality regressions along with speed/memory improvements. Add retrieval only after the base assistant is stable, and document what remains untested.

Expected output and validation

A local assistant demonstration with reproducible hardware, latency and offline-test notes. Privacy guarantees and model-quality claims require evidence beyond this prototype.

  • A query completes with the network disconnected after setup.
  • The app uses loopback rather than a hosted inference endpoint.
  • Model comparisons use identical prompts and report failures as well as successes.
